One of his best stories. The prior reviews mention that England's attitudes between the two world wars was a main theme of this book. It is fascinating and the characters are well done and memorable.

The Great Prince Shan E Phillips Oppenheim 9781508523987 Books Reviews

On Feb 3, 1946, I noted in my diary "E. Phillips Oppenheim, 79, mystery witer, died in England today. He wrote 160 books." On Feb 10, 1946, I wrote "Finished 'The Greaat Prince Shan' by Oppenheim, the guy who died last Sunday. Not bad." I admit that today (17 Apr 2011) I have no memory of the book. so this "review" really consits of two words " Not bad." Well, that is more of a review than amy other person so far has posted on .
Mr Nigel Kingley is the heir of the Earl of Dorminster, a retired British diplomat who maintains a secret service of agents in Europe. Dorminster is assisted by his pragmatic and brilliant niece Lady Maggie Trent. Written in 1922, the story is set 1934.

England is governed by mediocre middle class politicians focused on international trade and ignorant of the evil ways of Germany. Germany meanwhile has been humiliated by the treaty of Versailles and is intent on revenge against the English. At stake are the alliances for the next war. Russian is represented by the young and beautiful Naida Keretsky. Germany by the slick and evil Oscar Immelan. The key to the future alliance is the role which China will play, represented by the cultured, reserved and brilliant Prince Shan, graduate of Oxford and Harvard.

England in the post WW1 period became strongly anti- military. This, and economic problems, brought about Britain's unreadiness for WW2. A few politicians, Churchill among them, saw the foolishness of this stance. Oppenheim was very clear, even as early as 1922, that another war would be fought, and that England was unprepared. England was pursuing an economic strategy based on commerce which would "make war impossible." This attitude ultimately led to the "Peace in our time" blindness of Chamberlain.

Who will align themselves? Will Germany, Russia and China parcel out the world amongst themselves? Despite his ultimately fanciful plot, Oppenheim accurately predicts the correct shape of the Allied powers of WW2, almost 20 years before the war. The isolationist view of the U.S. is very strong. There is an "interracial" romance which is quite unusual for the time.
The new paperback version being sold here is horrible, with odd margins, paragraphing, typeface and spacing that make it virtually unreadable. should stop selling it.
I'm a fan of Oppenheim's fiction. I go through spates of reading four of five. The settings in the early 20th Century give an interesting look at the social expectations and often the political scene as well. This one includes political intrigue around potential pacts between China, Germany and Russia between the World Wars.
This is not his most intriguing work, but is a fun read.
This takes place between ww1 and ww2. Introduces a lot of eastern flavor and romance. Love it love it. Highly recommend. So different from previous works. So highly evolved.
